Gum Disease Treatment & Management

Gum disease is the most common oral health concern patients face today, with a wide majority of adults suffering from a mild to advanced stage. While symptoms may seem insignificant at first, you can eventually face bone deterioration and tooth loss if your case is left untreated for too long. Studies have even shown that the presence of gum disease can have negative effects on heart disease, diabetes, and pregnancy. Here at Catonsville Dental Center, our team offers several revitalizing care options for this dangerous condition.

Gingivitis is the earliest stage of gum disease, and with Dr. Onanuga’s help, it’s a relatively simple issue to treat. Regular thorough cleanings at one of our practices and a more diligent homecare routine should be effective enough in containing any ill effects.

When gum disease is left untreated it progresses beyond gingivitis, and it is then called periodontitis which is a chronic inflammatory disease. At this later stage, the tissues and bone that support the teeth are broken down and destroyed, resulting in deep gum pockets, swollen and inflamed gum that continue to bleed easily, halitosis (bad breath), loose teeth and eventual tooth loss. Upon careful diagnosis, Periodontal Scaling (Deep cleaning) is performed and antibiotics may also be prescribed. In most extreme and severe periodontitis, patients are referred to local periodontist for further management and monitoring.

Sleep Apnea Treatment

If chronic snoring, painful headaches, and daytime exhaustion are constants in your life, you may be suffering from a potentially serious condition known as sleep apnea. Sleep apnea involves the blockage of the airway and pauses in breathing while unconscious which interrupts deep sleep and contributes to conditions like high blood pressure and heart disease. If you’ve been diagnosed with sleep apnea by a specialist or your general doctor, please pay us a visit. Dr. Onanuga can provide you with a customized mouthguard (also known as a snoreguard) that alters the position of the jaw in a comfortable way eliminating breathing problems, allowing you to rest easy.

Sedation Dentistry

Does the thought of visiting the dentist make you feel nervous or anxious? You’re not alone. Dr. Onanuga’s goal is to help patients feel as relaxed as possible throughout their appointment, which is why he offers sedation dentistry. Both nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation are available to take the edge off negative feelings and allow patients to feel at ease. If you’d be interested in undergoing sedation dentistry at either of our locations, please contact us for more information.

Digital X-Rays

In the past, traditional X-ray systems required time spent in a darkroom in order to develop the film, as well as significant doses of radiation for patients. Today, our state-of-the-art digital X-ray technology in Catonsville has completely transformed this process into one that’s simpler than ever. With the help of a small sensor placed in the patient’s mouth, images are captured and displayed on a nearby computer screen in a matter of seconds, and the file can be stored digitally, transferred to insurance companies, and even color-coded for patient education purposes. Best of all, the amount of radiation patients experience is reduced up to 90%.
